"Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV and is more treacherous than parachuting." - Dr. Levine, Mayo Clinic |
It is common sense that
sitting for long periods of time is not healthy for
anyone! This understanding leads people to believe that they must
spend countless hours at the local gym to become healthy.
Realistically, both of these lines of thinking are extreme... one is
completely sedentary while the other boarder-line's obsessive. Neither is
the ideal situation.
Many people fail to understand that if we simply
increase our daily activity, moderately, we can become healthier and lose
weight.
The bulk of a person's
caloric consumption is from life-sustaining functions such as breathing,
blood flow, thinking, driving your car, brushing your teeth and hair,
etc. just the normal, day-to-day activities. It's amazing to me that the
average person burns 1200-1500 calories per day just doing the basic
minimum activity required to sustain life and a normal lifestyle.
Furthermore, it really
boggles my mind when I think that I only burn 280 extra calories
by jogging a 4 miles for one hour !! (Basically a 15 min mile). If I can
increase it to a 12 min mile, I can actually get to about 450 calories in
that same hour. (Resources: Calories Burned, LiveStrong) But if I slowly
walk at my desk instead of sit all day, I could burn an extra 640-800
calories per day, assuming I walk about 1 mile per hour for 8 hours. Now, I
have been doing the walk-at-work thing on and off for many years. It's
not realistic to think that a person will get their Tread-Top and start
walking 8 hours a day while they work. It usually is about 2 hours per
day for the first week or so. Then 2 hours in the morning and two hours
in the afternoon, because honestly, we like to sit and work too! And
that's ok. Walking 4 hours a day is a lot! Then, if you go to the gym
before or after work for strength training and/or cardio training, you
have easily doubled, if not tripled, your daily calories burned and you
didn't have to spend more time at the gym doing it. As well, you didn't
spend thousands of dollars either!
By taking advantage of the flexibility and
portability of the Tread-Top, people can take their Tread-Top to their
work gym and walk while-they-work, or walk-and-work at home, or in a hotel
if one travels a lot. Aside from burning calories, studies have shown
that walking moderately can help with the following:
Reduce your risk of or manage type 2
diabetes
